THE SUN
The Sun shines with positivity, joy, and celebration—just like that first refreshing sip of a crisp lager on a sunny day. This card is a reminder to soak up the simple happiness that comes with enjoying a great beer with friends, perhaps at a lively beer garden or festival. Expect good times and vibrant energy, and allow yourself to fully enjoy the moment!
Serendip is an Old Persian name for the country of Sri Lanka, my father’s homeland, and the origin of the word “Serendipity” - an unplanned fortunate discovery.
These two points formed the inspiration for what you have in your hand. Twelve different cans have been produced, each representing a specific Tarot card, and with the way the Canvent® Calendar works, you have discovered one of them… fortuitously and unplanned.
Each design has a corresponding fortune that is appropriate for the tarot card the can is based on.
About the beer
Brewer’s Notes
Tropical Stout (BJCP 16c) is often made with lager yeast fermented at warmer temperatures with the addition of adjunct sugars, as is the case with this beer. NovaLager yeast was used at 19degC with the addition of Kithul Jaggery, an unrefined palm sugar that’s produced from the sap of the Fishtail Palm tree and used commonly in Sri Lankan cooking.
The “tropical” in the name technically relates to the style’s origins in the Caribbean, but I wanted it to be more literal – so tropical fruit-forward hops were used extensively.
Tango – a modern German hop = Passion Fruit, Pineapple, Resinous
HBC 1019 – Experimental US Hop = Coconut, Honeydew, Orange, Peach, Tropical Fruits
El Dorado - Liquid Dry Hop = Candy, Citrus, Fruity, Mango
The malts were chosen to maximise dark colour and roastiness, and avoid any harsh astringent or burnt flavours. With the exception of Carafa and Special X, all malts were grown and malted in South Australia by Coopers and AMSAT.
